Columbia SC Photographer | The Real Deal With Makeup

I think there are some people who get nervous about having their makeup done. There seems to be a negative association with words like "makeover" or phrases like "get your makeup done." It could be that some have the idea that they'll look overdone or maybe they remember the ridiculous 1980's glamour shots. We can all laugh about that now. True modern glamour photography is quite beautiful, let's not ruin it's reputation by confusing it with the 80's. No offense 80's babies, I was one too. The music was the best, right?

When looking for a makeup artist, it's so important to work with one who is not offended easily. If and when a client tells the artist that they want a little less or a little more of a color or product, the artist must have a good attitude and be happy to accommodate them. My clients are coming in for portraits and those will be on their walls for years. This is why it's so important that the client loves what they see when they look in the mirror. I personally want everyone to have a more natural look in the studio. I like the fair porcelain look, no heavy makeup lines or shiny glitter shadows or lips. This look photographs the most beautifully for my style. We add makeup only to give clients a little boost in confidence and bring true beauty to the surface.

I had a local makeup artist in the studio this weekend for a session and I decided to do a little introduction and interview. I asked Jaimie why she loves makeup and how she got her start. This is what she she had to say.

Question: What's your background? Introduce yourself, where are you from? "My name is Jaimie Maynor and I wanted to share a little bit about me and how I got into the makeup business. I am originally a New Jersey girl but moved with my family down to South Carolina for my teen years, I attended High school in Lexington (White Knoll) and went out of state to college where I got my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Communications at Liberty University. I currently work in an accounting office but my true passion lies with all things beauty and makeup.

Question: When did you know you loved makeup and wanted to do this professionally? "My mom is a cosmetologist so it just came natural after years of watching her. I had also developed a passion for art and realized I could combine makeup and art to help women feel beautiful in their own skin. Makeup is a passion I have, I am a self-taught artist and I love that I can use my talent to help other people look and feel their best. I did several weddings, pageants, proms etc. before I realized that I should be charging for my services! My husband encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a makeup artist. It was then that I decided to venture into my own business.

Question: What's your style? "I don't have a specific style, I aim to listen to the client and figure out what they want and work within their comfort zone."

Question: What is your goal for each client? "My goal with each client is to make them feel beautiful in their own skin. I am a firm believer that everyone has beauty, sometimes we just need a little makeup to help us realize it's there. Makeup shouldn't be used just to cover flaws, but to enhance the things that you already love about yourself."

Question: Do you have any favorite products? "Because I work with a lot of different types of women for various events, I love to give advice for the best products that truly work. In February, I became a distributor for the best lipstick around... Lipsense!"

I appreciate Jaimie giving us a little more information about what she does. I hope that this put some people at a greater comfort level in regards to having someone apply their makeup. Having someone in your space and touching your face is deeply personal for some. I don't require professional makeup during a session with me however, special instructions will need to be given for applying your own. My goal is to make you the most beautiful you that you ever seen. Too many you's? It's all about you.
